Universally acknowledged as Russia's greatest poet, Pushkin set the standards and provided models which have formed and directed the national literature ever since. The Russian language itself was reformed by his innovatory use of it. His eight hundred lyrics, numerous narrative poems, tales in verse and prose, historical and critical articles, along with his collected letters, comprise the richest single treasure-house in Russian culture. His works have inspired thousands of musical versions, including several famous operas.
