C.S. Lewis cria uma narrativa extremamente envolvente usando somente um dos lados de uma conversa por correspondência. Screwtape (um demônio mais experiente) troca cartas com seu sobrinho Wormwood (um demônio inexperiente). Durante a conversa, o autor traz a tona a conduta humana em seus aspectos pessoal, interpessoal e religioso.
