In Blackwater in the early 1990s, three women - Dora Devereux, her daughter Lily and her granddaughter Helen - have come together after years of strife and reached an uneasy truce. Helen's adored brother Declan is dying. Two friends join him and the women in a crumbling old house by the sea, where the six of them, from different generations and with different beliefs, must listen and come to terms with one another.

O livro trata das relações afetivas, às vezes tão delicadas, entre familiares e entre amigos – a família que escolhemos. Nesta história a tensão maior está na relação desgastada, ou melhor, na quase não-relação entre mãe (Lily) e filha (Helen), quando se vêem “obrigadas” a conviver juntas durante um final de semana na casa da avó/mãe (Dora, que não tem papas na língua), para ajudar a cuidar do irmão/filho (Declan) que está doente de AIDS.
